General Thoughts:

The Exodus WordPress theme is designed by ChurchThemes.com, one of our favorite church theme companies.  It is their first theme that has a full width slider and a flat design concept.  We highly recommend the Exodus theme because it is one of the best church WordPress themes out there today.  It is packed with all the great features of their first two designs (Resurrect and Risen).  It is easy to use.  It is very flexible and customizable.  This means any type of church (rural and urban, traditional and contemporary, and everything in between) can use it to create a professional looking site.   If you want to learn more about the company and it’s vision, read our interview we did with Steven Gliebe.

Who This is For:

We strongly recommend ChurchThemes.com’s Exodus WordPress theme for any church website.  It’s many built-in features make it easy for a beginner to  create a new professional looking website.  We think it also has enough advanced features that make it a favorite for experienced WordPress designers too.  ChurchThemes.com continues to offer top notch setup documentation.  We have heard amazing things about their email support too.

Pros:

Price & Money Back Guarantee: ChurchThemes.com continues their tradition of offering $79 themes.  This is a very reasonable price for a very professional WordPress theme!  ChurchThemes.com stands by their products and offers a 45 day money back guarantee on your Exodus theme purchase!

Top Notch Tutorials and Support: The amazing step by step tutorials are just one of the reasons we recommend ChurchThemes.com.  They are detailed and easy to follow.  The Exodus theme takes this to another level with the brief instructions that are imbedded into the theme.   My favorite example of this is the slider widget and featured image area, where ChurchThemes.com lists the recommended image size before you upload the image.  This helps you chose the best images for that particular application and reduces the amount of time it takes to create your site because you don’t have to hunt down this info on your own.

Beautiful Responsive Format: Exodus utilizes flat design, which looks awesome on tablets and cell phones.  It is built in!  This is becoming very important because more and more people are checking out your church website on their mobile devices.

Flexible Home Page Slider: Exodus uses the same slider format as the Resurrect theme.    You don’t have to be a photo editor to create professional looking slides.  You can trim the images to the correct size using WordPress , then use Exodus’s Home Slider Widget to create titles and description over them.  You can have an unlimited number of slides.  They can be comprised of images and videos.  You can adjust how fast they rotate.

Customizable Header: Research is showing that it is critical for you to have your most important information at the top of every page.  Exodus has a customizable header area that allows you to have multiple navigation menus, as well as upcoming events or other important information.  They are one of the few themes to do this.

Page Banner Feature: Not everyone has the graphic software or designer to create stunning images.  ChurchThemes.com realizes this.  You can upload a featured image and enter the text you want to appear above it.  The style format is the same as your home page slider and other images.  This allows beginners to create very uniform and professional sites in seconds!

Church Theme Content Plugin: ChurchThemes.com continues to develop their themes to work with their free Church Theme Content Plugin.  Once you install this plugin, you have a ton of important church features (events, sermons, staff, and more) built into your site.  It also make podcasting a breeze.   Read more about it here.

Church-related Page Templates: The Exodus is obviously designed for churches.  It includes different page templates to help speed up the page creation process.  The templates cover all the pages that are important to churches (sermons, events, people, blog, etc.).

Social Media: ChurchThemes.com seamlessly integrates social media into the Exodus theme design.  Visitors can connect to your church’s presence on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc. via the icons in the header and footer sections!  Their customizable menu makes it easy to set up.  All the social media icons are imbedded into the theme.  All you have to do is enter in the correct links.

Sidebar Options: Exodus also offers sidebar widgets for each of the different categories of pages templates.  These widgets allow you to highlight different things on the sides of pages that were created with page templates.  This allows you to simultaneously highlight sermon related stuff on sermon pages and worship service info next to all your staff bio.

Fast Load Time: The Exodus theme is designed with minimal code, so it loads quickly.  This improves search engine optimization and visitor engagement.

Cons:

Church Theme Plugin Events do not Sync: Another thing to be aware of is that the Church Themes plugin does not currently sync with Google Calendar or Facebook events.  If your church uses these to promote events or share information you will have to look at a different calendar plugin to accomplishes these tasks, or assign someone to update the info in multiple locations.  Their new premium ($29) recurring events plugin now allows you to create recurring events in their calendar system.

Neutral Things to be Aware of:

Home Page Designation: The exodus theme is designed to use a static home page.  This means that you have to create a home page (make sure you use the home page template) and assign it in the customization section.  This is a fine way to do it, and it offers a ton of flexibility.  However, it is slightly different than the default homepage and built-in templates that other design companies use.  The documentation clearly tells you how to do this; it is just something to be aware of when you create your first site.

Single Footer Widget:  The Exodus Theme allows you to include a map in your footer area, which is great.  However, I personally would love it if they had more footer widgets because I tend to use footers for multiple purposes.

Column Page Layout Options: I like to create pages with multiple columns in the main page area.  Unfortunately, the Exodus code does not have a plugin or short code to allow you to do this (like Elegant Themes or Genesis Framework).  This is not an issue for 95% of the population because they can use the sidebars to create a similar feel.  If you are an advanced user who likes the flexibility, you might miss it!

Overall, Exodus is an amazing theme!  We think you will be very pleased if you buy it!
