Does your church need to create a new website?  Don’t know where to begin?  Creating a website can seem intimidating.  That is why I created this website!  Our goal is to help create your own WordPress website.   Don’t worry!  It is actually easier than you think.

There are four main components to creating a website.

  1. A Domain Name:  This also known as the web address.  It is the address that people use to find your site.  A domain name usually costs around $10 (Ex. www., and  you usually buy it from your web hosting company.
  2. Web Host:  A web host is also called a web server.  It is the computer/server that stores your site.  The price varies depending on what you need (Free- $6 a month).  Click here to see our recommended hosting companies and tutorial videos.
  3. Web Site (Pages):  These files are the pages that people see when they visit your  site.  They can be created with a variety of different software programs or online tools. This site is geared towards WordPress websites, so click here to learn about the four basic components of a WordPress website.
  4. Content Management System (CMS): A content management system (often referred to as a CMS) is a set of software that is designed to allow users with little or no knowledge of web programming languages to create webpages (edit page layout, write text, and upload images).  WordPress is an example of a Content Management System.

For some people, this still seems too abstract.  If it is helpful, you can think of a website in terms of a car.  There are tons of different automobile manufacturers (Ford, Honda, etc.) and different makes and models of cars.  Cars are all similar in that they get you to where you need to go.  However, each manufacturer and model has different options.  When you buy a car, you determine what  is best for you based on its strengths and weaknesses, your budget, and what you need.   Similarly, all websites serve the same function.  They are designed to showcase your church online.  There are ton of different options for how to create a website.  There are many platforms and tools that you can use that are viable options.  This website focuses on WordPress tools because we believe that WordPress is the most cost-effective way to build professional-looking sites for very little cost.  Click here to learn about some of your other options.

Content Management System:

In this analogy, the content management system would be the car’s engine.  It is what powers your website.  You can power your car with a gas or a diesel engine or an electric motor.  There are strengths and weaknesses to each.  There are different CMS options out there, like WordPressDrupal, and Joomla!  Each has its strengths and weaknesses as well.  Obviously, we think WordPress is a great option.  Here’s why!

Web Host:

If you were creating a new car design, you need a place where people could come to see it.  Car showrooms not only store your car, they also make it easy for people to see it.  Your web host is like the showroom.  It is a computer connected to the internet that stores your website files.  Click here to learn about the hosting companies we recommend.

Domain Name:

However, people can’t find your new car in its showroom unless they know the physical address of your showroom building.   Your domain name acts as a digital address for people to find your website.  The cool thing is that you can choose what you want your address to be!

These are the only three things you need to create a site.  If you are newer to website design and exploring your options, it may seem a bit more complicated than this.  This is true because a lot of times you are comparing apples to oranges to pears.  Different companies combine the three components differently.  Some companies just sell domains and web hosting.  Others sell just website designs.  Others sell all three.
